Progressive Commons: Incorporation
Between 2003 and 2005, Progressive Commons (progressivecommons.org) was an online, all volunteer thinktank devoted to discussing questions of political language and advocacy from a progressive point of view. Boasting academics and industry professionals who focus on issues of political discourse, the site was read regularly by people in other media outlets (ABC News, Houston Chronicle, Greenberg Research), quoted in the Washington Post, and boasted a small but loyal readers. Its content was much lengthier, more article-like, that most blog-powered websites, as it attempted to analyze discursive practices and offer suggestions for how progressives might use media savvy, rhetorically astute counter-discourses.
Progressive Commons went dormant for a time, and now the site and organization is in the process of redevelopment. Our goal is to incorporate as a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit that would more formally analyze political discourse, offer progressive correctives, and offer educational seminars to help train progressives in debate and punditry skills, all with a keen attention to how it is that rhetoric functions to shape political reality. As such, Progressive Commons would be a compliment to organizations like the Rockridge Institute, as well as a corrective, in that its focus would move beyond simple framing and into the more nuanced manifestations of political language.
This began as a volunteer effort, and as we move into the next stage of building we are hoping to garner community support. We are looking to raise funds for two purposes, to cover the cost of the nonprofit incorporation and to provide some funds to help with enhancing website design and function. We are asking for your help, and hoping that together, we can substantively change the American political imaginary, and thus American political reality.
